There are a few well known resources for small business, private company transaction data. The below provides an overview of ValuSource Market Comps and some unique characteristics that are different from other business valuation resources.
ValuSource is one of the leading business valuation and software platforms. One of its products is the ValuSource Market Comps transaction database (formerly IBA Market Comps).
The database has over 37,000 transactions from over 800 industries in the SIC and NAICS code structure. They also have over 2,500 transactions over $1 million and over 6,000 transactions from the last five years.
ValuSource has also built in expanded fields for analysis and has a Market Comps Analyzer that lets a user import data on a subject business to analyze that business to market data.
Three elements are contained in either the asking price or sale price that is reported - inventory, fixtures & equipment and intangible assets (including goodwill). Cash, accounts receivable, real estate and all liabilities are excluded. Most of the transactions are asset sales.
Each transaction is categorized by an SIC and NAICS code and can be analyzed based on numerous parameters including location, revenue, discretionary earnings, etc.
